On Tuesday October 1st. the Bowmanville Rotary Club was pleased to host numerous guests at their regular Tuesday morning meeting, but were more than excited when Oshawa Rotarian Gerry Johnston attended with his family.

They were invited guests that morning to receive a cheque in support of the fundraising efforts that Gerry and his family have launched for the ALS Foundation (ALS can also be referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Gerry and his wife were thrilled to go to Scotland last year as part of the 2012 Canadian Rotary Golf Team where Gerry was a great anchor for the Canadians.  Gerry was to be part of the team fighting for the honour of retaining the Shield Cup which pitches our Canadian Team that went to Scotland last year against the Team that came to Canada this year; however, life stepped in and gave Gerry and his family a new challenge when Gerry was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Throughout their time in Canada the Scottish Rotarians get fined and present Happy Bucks at each of their three stops; however, at the same time Canadians are also fined and present happy bucks all which are part of the Scottish Team's "earnings".  Then at the end of the tour at our final banquet night the cheque is usually presented to the Canadian Hosts for various local Charities.

This year the Scottish Team was pleased to raise $2,100 which they turned around and presented back to the Canadian Teams.  Each area visited received $700.  Belleville/Picton and Bowmanville pooled their money and Barrie added some additional funds and decided that they would honour their Canadian team mate Gerry Johnston with their funds to aid in his fight against ALS.

Gerry's health is not great; however, he looked terrific when he rose up to receive a cheque for $1600 from his three teammates: Randy Henry, Steve Code and Kevin Anyan.  With a big smile on his face and a thumbs up, we knew that Gerry was thrilled to receive this money.

Gerry's fight is still ongoing but the family is prepared not only to fight but to help the organization with fund raising efforts to assist with research to eliminate this Disease.
